I've a feeling she didn't know her husband really well. No sane person ever directs that level of violence on their offspring. Ever. He must have had bad violence in his past. Or a severe mental disorder. Both, probably.

I feel this really hit at home with me because in the heat of the moment, I have thrown a control across the room in blind rage. I have a baby due any day now and I do not want to continue to have this temper while my child are present. I would never ever want to have a game create that sort of situation. Games, no matter how fun, are simply just "games."
Unleashing your rage on an inanimate object is a completely different problem than inflicting violence on your children. These don't necessarily go hand-in-hand, so you probably don't need to worry about the safety of your children - provided you your self don't have violent history (e.g. abusive parents), or some mental disorders. Take this from another father with temper.
Which ofc doesn't mean you needn't be aware of your impulses. Having a child witness that kind of an outburst can be frightening for him/her, and certainly not a good example.

Perhaps, my own eyes have been opened, and it is myself who needs to set an example for my own children when it comes to handling yourself.
I'd say this article was worth posting, then.
